In this section, Joy White’s personal interpretation
of the sea is shown in her fine photographic prints, where art,
reality and creative visualisation combine.
Photography and time are inextricably
linked. Joy White is aiming to give an impression of the passage
of time, and its associations of ‘stillness’, ‘movement’,
‘reflection’ and ‘memory’, through photographing
the sea using a technique that involves long exposures. Through
this technique of using exposures ranging from several seconds
to several minutes, these images show the sea in a way that is
not normally seen, making what is ‘invisible’ to the
eye, visible.
From the very origins of photography
in the 1840s, to today, water has fascinated photographers. Photography
essentially explores light; the unique way in which water reflects
and plays with light means that capturing images of the sea is
seemingly elusive, yet compelling. |
